Are you shopping for an espresso maker for the first time? It can be quite overwhelming with a huge selection of different coffee makers on the market and all the technical features they offer.
Many modern espresso machines are fully automated, and have a long list of special features. As these bells and whistles can be confusing to aspiring baristas, I compiled a list of the most important features of todays coffee machines – including a description of the function of each!
Cup Warmer – this feature is pretty self explanatory but nevertheless important. It prevents your espresso from losing heat while you are still brewing. Generally, it is simply a heating element at the bottom of the machine.
Pre-Moistening Cycle – it ensures that the coffee grounds are moistened before the shot is pulled. The purpose of this feature is to release the aromatic oils within the coffee grounds, resulting in a better espresso. It may have a different name dependent on the brand of espresso maker.
Strength Control – some coffee machines allow you to dial in the exact amount of water and grounds used for each shot. Although many machines are fully automatic, they may still offer this option so an experienced barista can produce the best shot of espresso possible.
Pod Compatible – pods are small, pre-packed containers of coffee grounds that greatly reduce the time you need to make delicious coffee. They make espresso preparation easy and mess free. Many new espresso makers include adapters for pods, while still allowing the use of regular grounds.
Hot Water Dispenser – this common feature does exactly what it sounds like – it dispenses hot water for tea, hot chocolate, or other hot drinks. As a user you won’t have to drag out a kettle or heat the water in your microwave.
Frothing Wand – if you plan to make lattes or cappuccinoes, then this feature is essential. It enables you to steam milk and create froth to top off your coffee drink. More advanced machines even come with an integrated canister for the milk.
Integrated Bean Grinder – although bean grinders are not a standard feature on every machine, they are certainly convenient. They grind the exact amount of beans for your desired coffee drink, which give you the freshest cup possible.
Water Filter – this is not a typical feature of many espresso makers, but definitely worthwhile for the true connoisseur. It removes chlorine, iron, and other impurities from your tap water for the purest coffee.
